Landegg International University invites applicants for the position of library director for an academic library. This is an opportunity to help create an effective research library for Landegg International University, a Bahá’í-inspired institution with a world-embracing vision and an integrative approach to academic pursuits.
Landegg, as an international institution of extraordinary cultural diversity, requires a sensitive, highly motivated, detail-oriented, creative individual with extensive experience with small academic libraries to advance the process of organizing the university library’s holdings.
Position description: Housed in one room of a 200-year-old building, the Library currently consists of approximately 8,000 books, pamphlets, and manuscripts that have been donated over the years. Most of the English-language collection is classified according to the Library of Congress system. Most of the material in the 50 or more other languages represented in the collection has not yet been converted from a local system to LC. A search is currently underway for a suitable electronic circulation system to replace the paper checkout system still in use. Another strong priority of the Library Committee is to provide Web resources to the Landegg master’s and distance education students who do not live on campus.
Major responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for the successful planning, organization, policy development, implementation, and direction of all aspects of the Landegg library. Working with the Library Committee, the Director will provide leadership and vision in planning, developing, and implementing information technology strategies for the delivery of the Library’s services and for effective and efficient operation of administrative functions. A central responsibility of this position will be to lead the development of Web-based resources and tools that support instructional programs and reference services at Landegg, including the development of electronic and print resources such as tutorials and handouts.
The Director is also responsible for all aspects of the cataloguing process, including original and complex copy cataloguing for materials in various formats and languages, for control of quality in the production of bibliographic records, and for evaluating, planning and implementing strategies to meet the library’s future cataloguing needs.
Qualifications:
The candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively with flexibility and attention to detail, with a strong service orientation, and the ability to adjust priorities based on changing needs;
Must have a broad knowledge of both print and online information sources, and a familiarity with the challenges of working with a large and diverse library clientele;
Must have academic library experience; experience using technology in an educational or library setting; familiarity with Microsoft Office, and Web-page development, with a demonstrated knowledge of current emerging technologies as they contribute to meeting the needs of researchers and students in an academic community;
Must have an understanding of and experience with AACR2R and Library of Congress (LC) rule interpretations, practices, and standards in creating bibliographic records, including LC subject headings and classification schemes, and experience with library database maintenance control.
Preferred: Experience or training related to Web design and Web authoring, working knowledge of Persian and at least one European language, and experience with grant writing are also highly desirable.
Start date: June 2002
